Johannesburg And Soweto Tour

1 Day

Johannesburg:

Founded in 1886 after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. Became a boomtown, attracting people from across the globe seeking fortune. Developed as a center for mining and finance, with limited rights for Black South Africans.

Soweto:

Emerged in the 1930s as the white government enforced racial segregation. Black residents were forced to relocate from Johannesburg to townships further out, with Soweto becoming the largest. Faced poor living conditions, limited services, and served as a labor force for Johannesburg with minimal rights.

Key Points:

Soweto’s growth mirrored Johannesburg’s need for workers, but with a stark separation in living conditions. Soweto became a centre of resistance against Apartheid, with the 1976 Soweto Uprising being a pivotal moment.

It is a great place to shop not too far from Europe. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
