Soweto, which stands for South Western Townships, is a large township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa. It’s located on the south-western edge of Johannesburg, bordering the city’s mining belt.
Soweto is the largest black urban residential area in South Africa. It was originally established in the 1930s by the white government of South Africa to segregate black people from white people under the apartheid system. Soweto played a central role in the struggle against apartheid, and was the site of the Soweto Uprising in 1976, a major turning point in the anti-apartheid movement.
